so as it says on the tin, you lovely peoples, does any body else believe they are utterly useless as a helpful service or even as a listening ear ?, i feel that sometimes they cause more harm than good ?, so who thought they were ever a good idea ?, like they cannot give advice, they cannot give guidance, they cannot tell you there own thoughts feels and opinions of your current situation, or relate in anyways to you so what is the point of such services, feels like a band aid type method for somebody in a crisis situation, what is the need for these services if they don't help people deal with there issues on a fundamental level ?, here in the uk i dont feel they are fit for purpose, i cant imagine they are too different in the us, anybody in agreement at how utterly inept they are ?, samaritans are the worse, and where most of us juggling mental ill health get signposted to.

They are maybe a good idea for someone who experiences first in life or rarely occuring impulsive crisis, not for someone "chronically" suicidal or with more long term problems of any kind

I've never even bothered with them, there's never anything a stranger there could say to change my mind or help me in any way

Ted Bundy used to entertain himself answering one.

i remember seeing a youtube video on that bro, like people who worked in the contact centre with him said he genuinely tried to help the suicidal or something, and then in his down time he would go out kill mutilate and behead young targeted females, it is a paradox i guess into the mind of a seriel killer, on one hand trying to help people genuinely, and on the other hand killing indiscriminately, nielsen was like that in the uk, he was known for being charitable in the army, as a chef he wanted his soldiers well fed and took care of, he worked in a jobcentre also as a civil servant, but in his private life he was murdering young men, (nielsen was homosexual), then he went onto boil the heads of his victims in his flat, a truly foul creature, thanks for your comment brother

i personally think that helplines should have to have people with mental illness work with them so they can have a better understanding before and during calls.

I guess it was Ted Bundy God complex - feeling of power over people life and death, that's why working for helpline is not so entirely out of place.

well said man, they say these killers operate by control, i guess your correct buds in that he felt a sense of control over others lives like you say the power to give life and take it away, i dont understand how they can do what they do to others, not even hatred or rage explains it truly, i guess we will never know for sure what leads em to commit such horrid crimes maybe upbringing ?,

Any suicide hotline sounds like a useless waste of time to me. At least to me words are pointless and they don't exactly change anything for anybody. It's irritating when people say 'call a hotline', in response to someone being suicidal regardless of their situation and what they are going through. I doubt it would really improve anything, I think that a lot of non suicidal people are completely ignorant as to how suicidal people experience life. A lot of people are also in denial of the cruel reality of this existence.

They're great for the 16-year-old about to swallow a whole bottle of aspirin due to a break up. Not so great for the person who went through years of trauma. My main issue is that normies hand those numbers out like candy to anyone with such ideations without understanding how those two scenarios would be different.
