I looked at the contraption in the PPH for CO poisoning and think I might try that. Apparently, the reactants are supposed to be restricted but I looked them up and you can just order them? Am I missing something?

If not, is there a way to test if the reaction occurs and enough CO is produced? Also, if I do it the way in the book, does it matter if I'm in an open area? Sorry, lots of questions.

No idea if it's that easy to just order the chemicals you'd need. You can test for how much CO is generated in a given space by using a CO analyzer (note this is not a CO meter that merely warns with a beep of CO presence). An analyzer that measures up to 10000 PPM (Parts Per Million) is about $300 US. It's done with the mask in the PPH? Makes no difference if you're in open space. Might be better to do it in open space so you don't inadvertently harm/kill someone who finds you.

Whether something is restricted depends on your location. Exit is Australia based where the acids are apparently restricted. If you're not there they might not be.

I think you're confusing meters with monitors. Meters are perfectly fine and give readings in ppm. It's monitors that don't. You can get monitors for much less than $300 USD. May not be as accurate as the high end models but for SaSu purposes they don't need to be +/- .01% accurate and last for 10 years.

Different countries - different regulations. Sales of concentrated sulfuric acid are restricted in some countries.

Bubbles of CO are clearly visible. The produced gas can be ignited, it burns with a bluish flame.

Possible methods depend on how you're going to use the gas. Many people tend to use poisonous gases in wasteful ways, dissipating them in large confined spaces. Then a lot of gas is needed to produce a sufficient concentration of it. In case of using some of the most efficient setups (f.e., a 10-liter plastic bag over the head), 2 - 4 liters of nearly pure CO would be more than enough for CTB. Such volumes can be contained in a spherical balloon inflated to diameters of 16 - 20 cm. Even if 3/4 of 2 liters is leaked out, you still get way more than 13000 ppm inside a closed system consisting of the volume of the lungs, the airways, and a small space of 5 - 10 L around the head). Although the concentration of CO will decrease as the gas is consumed via inhalation, loss of consciousness and respiratory arrest should happen fairly quickly, so the desirable effects would be achieved before CO is used up.

No, I'm not confusing anything. I have my analyzer I purchased already. It was under $300, but that was only because the company sent me a discount "coupon" for first time customer purchase on their website. They're not called meters. They're analyzers.
