So today a very famous celebrity died (if you don't know who, then feel free to browse any form of social media or, failing that, continue living under your rock - it's probably a safer place than out here anyway!). I'm not saying people are wrong to mourn him by any means, but when celebrities die they are idolised and glamorised forever etc etc, whereas when us 'normal' people pass it's like noone gives a shit after like a month or so.

Is it some unwritten rule that deceased celebrities have never done any wrong in their life, they've never messed up, they've never had an argument with someone? People put them on a pedestal when they could just be the same as someone else who did similar but never rose to that level of fame.

When I die, people are going to remember the times that I've fucked up. They might even say 'it's about time' (I've hurt a lot of people in the past).

I get that he did so much for the entertainment industry, and he has an enormous following etc etc, but I can't help but feel sad that when I die I'll be lucky to get a mention outside of my family.

Celebrities are a common thread that connects most people like food or music.
Seeing it like that, it makes sense to me why so many people pay attention to their passing.

Is it sad that normal people like us won't be remembered at all or by any meaningful extent?
Sure but IMO remembering people in this manner (talking about via via internet or social media) is a frivolous endeavor, as are virtually all sociological things.

We have a strong bias to be social. If social needs aren't met, cue the sadness/anxiety/discomforting feelings until the social stimuli is present or one "adapts" to the deficit/absence.
From a superficial view, this makes sense from an evolutionary perspective: being social fosters group building which increases chances of survival to pass on genes.

So....what I'm getting at is that all things social appears to serve the sole purpose of keeping you/I alive therefore, as people who hate this life (or the totality of existence if you go to the logical extreme like I have), it is ideal (albeit exceedingly pointless) to steel ourselves against feelings of dread/unease over not being remembered.

If means anything: if you die before I do, I'll remember you every weekend by buying a bacon cheeseburger for a meal.

It's strange, isn't it? Stan Lee is only as important as you or I, but by the same token, he isn't, he's far more important. Nobody will really remember us in the grand scheme of things, outside of a few family members.

It's been hard for me to cope with life's basic injustices like that. For instance, many if not all of my problems could be solved by money. And it's awful to think there are millions of dollars just sitting around, doing nothing but making their owners more money by way of interest or investments. It's cruel and twisted, but at the same time it's all just an unlucky roll of the dice. Still, I have to take my life because I can't access the care and medical attention I need. It's sickening.

It is strange how we decide someone is so important because they're famous. Americans worship celebrities a weird amount.

I agree 100% and felt this way for along time. Celebrity worship is a sickness in my opinion. These people bleed red and shit brown just like the rest of us.

Nobody would give a damn if a homeless vet with PTSD died on the streets. If George W Bush passed he would have an elaborate funeral! The entire country would come to a stand still.
