Can you request who does and doesn't identify your body? Bit of a morbid question but this seems the right place for it. Some it would destroy, some I want it to destroy. (Although it really won't).

Might depend on your country/culture but where I live I would wager not. But I'm just speculating. Sorry I can't offer more information.

I have ID'd 2 family members in my life and I have also been on the scene with the coroner to remove the body, twice . The morgue will usually call next of kin, family member, etc. Not sure about them taking "requests". But then again, if a "stranger" has found u, then I guess they will...

However, if someone (fam member, friend) finds u n has ID'd you when the coroner gets there (filled out forms), then they will take that as the ID'ing of ur body n u will not b able to request someone else..

(I'm in NY so could b diff from UK..)

Hi thank you! I will try to not let a stranger find me. One of my immediate family has contributed to my awful set of circumstances and I would like them to identify the body. I will have iD on me. Other close family I simply do not want to traumatise. They don't deserve that, at all. I'm so sad I'm in this position. Life sometimes doesn't appear to have second chances, when it rains, it monsoons. Thanks.

You can request anything, but whether it is respected and followed is another matter entirely.

One tip would be to word your note as if you are deeply worried that your other family members would be too traumatised, and that you believe the person you are nominating is emotionally the strongest etc. Obviously, telling the truth (that your goal is about vengeance and you want to traumatise the nominated person) would certainly not work!

To a large extent, who they get to identify you will simply depend on which senior next of kin they are able to reach and get to agree first. But you never know, they may mention your wishes in the note to that person, and have a discussion where it might be mutually agreed to use the nominated person instead. But this would purely be a voluntary discussion that was prompted by the note. It wouldn't reflect any legal or moral obligation to follow your wishes.

Hypothetically, say for a gunshot death, it may seem suspicious to request someone specific to ID the body if it's not easily recognizable. I can imagine law enforcement still having them do it in order to observe their reaction, then have someone else you don't want traumatized do another identification.

I'm in the UK also. It comes.down to who your next of kin is. It isn't usually a friend etc... It is usually immediate family. If they aren't around then it's closest person to you. When you fill out those hospital forms and it asks you next of kin - that is who will identify you.
