Do you think it can ever fully go away.

It depends. But I don't think it can be "cured", there are ways to manage it though.

Yeah. It can. Sometimes it just takes time. There's a huge chunk of depression that can be improved simply by changing the way you think. There's a physical side you can't always control though. Medicine can help. I wish I could tell you what worked for me... But all I know is that the severity of how my depression feels nowadays is a LOT different than when I was younger. Funny thing though, feeling less depressed doesn't always mean thinking less about suicide. Obviously, I still do. But I'm not as tortured by feelings of depression like I used to be...

Some people only get it once or twice in their life. It's not chronic for everyone.

If the depression is existential in nature, then very likely not. It may be managed, but there is no real treatment or cure in my opinion. Many popular treatments for depression seem to involve some level of self-delusion and don't really get to the root of the problem—many people are fundamentally ill-equipped to cope with the pressures and anxieties of modern living. Many "solutions" are just bandaids—at least they seem that way to me.

On the other hand, if the depression is situational, then there's the possibility that it might go away or recede with time, or when the circumstances of the person's life change.

My mother passed it on me, it's genetics.

The only way I don't pass it is having no gf, easy or killing myself, not really easy but doable.

This is probably (or likely) me just being stupid, but that doesn't necessarily sound like it can be cured per-say. More like the effects from depression being lessened with the ways of coping with it (or in other words, your depression being more manageable, as you've put it).

It's not to say that it can't possibly be treated, but I don't think there's a real cure for depression, or at least in my opinion.

well N is a pretty good cure...
The only thing that helped me a few years was to isolate and only interact with other people when needed, like at work. Videogames, Netflix, Amazon Prime and my cats are a good distraction. The bad thing is "it" comes back and hit like a truck.
