buying rope for partial

probably gonna stop by hardware store and pick up a rope tomorrow. i'm 95%sure i'm doing partial but in case it doesn't work full is still on the table. what rope to get? i mostly just need to know the thickness. i have seen people say 6mm works but some thick ropes don't cut off blood flow so there has to be a "right size". i have found the sweet spot consistently with a necktie so that's my backup.
