anyone have experience with bupropion? Thinking specifically the side effects? But also effectivness.
Would be to treat anxiety/depression/obsessive thoughts etc, it seems like they have less side effects than other drugs.
I've done the ssri thing and they help but side effects too much for me. I read bupropion can cause hair loss and weight loss. Could do with out hair loss but hey maybe a price worth paying if it works.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you

I'm prescribed it right now but haven't been able to make taking them a habit.

I was only aware that it was for anxiety, but if it could help with obsessive thoughts I'd be more interested.

I've been on it years earlier for a decent amount of time. I didn't experience any side effects.

It made me feel kinda high at first which was cool but that quickly went away.

I've been taking bupropion for 2 months and I still have hair it seems lol.
As for the weight loss, I'm not moving at all and somehow, I lost 7 pounds, just WTF!!! I hope this keeps on going!!

Anyway, apart from the possible side effects, bupropion is really helping me to cope with my bipolar disorder. I'm having more "good days" than "bad ones"

Hope you can get better soon!

Hugs,

Matt

I took it for years before switching to Vyvanse. It's an NDRI like methylphenidate/Ritalin. It can help a lot with depression (mask it). Anxiety will probably either stay the same or become worse due to the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. It can definitely cause weight loss. I personally lost 20lbs. I recommend limiting caffeine for a bit.

It's one of the few meds that put a dent in my depression. I hope it helps.

Ah wow, thank you everybody for your replies. They are all very appreciated and helpful. I think I may try and see my Dr next week and give them a whirl.
And Matt glad to hear your finding its helping and your losing weight, and not your hair! Blimey, My kind of medication.. Could be the wonder drug.. But yes I'm wise enough to know there is no magic cure. But if it helps bipolar maybe it could reduce OCD thoughts etc.
Thanks again everyone. So very much appreciated

I took it for two months until it started to make my hands shake so I stopped. It helped slightly then the effects wore off.

Side effects are very mild. One of the better psych meds I've tried. Still not super effective, in my opinion, but then I don't think any of them really are.

I recall being on this for a while. It did absolutely nothing- not even side effects.

Thanks for all of your replies. I really appreciate them. I don't use social media etc so always blows me away when people respond.
I went to my Dr and he advised against bupropion which I was a bit disappointed about. He thinks it can increase depression and increase suicidal tendancy..not what I had read but didn't want to be all mr google dr about it so I accept his view.
He gave me Agomelatine (or Valdoxan) i realised after leaving I've already tried it in the past and made me spaced out, that combined with risk of liver disease side effects think I'll avoid. Anyone else tried it? Pretty dissapointing. Don't think there is going to be any pharmaceutical option for me unfortunatly.
Anyway thanks again for your msgs everyone

Wait... aren't Bupropion and Wellbutrin two different things?

Bupropion's brand name is "Buspar" which is used for anxiety. (non-benzo) Wellbutrin is an antidepressant right?

That's really interesting. Thanks. I'm frustrated my Dr couldn't let me just try it. I have a feeling it could help me.

been on anti-deppresants since the age of 15, I am now 38. Wellbutrin is the best anti-depressant that I have ever been on. It is not cheap. Just make sure that you really need to be on medications, because it is not easy to stop taking it.

PS; I once found a generic in South East Asia, it was really rubbish, it had no effect whatsoever.

Yeah ok, thanks. Appreciate that. Think imay have to find another Dr for a second opinion and try and get a prescription. So you think wellbutrin is addictive? Or is it more because it works it makes it hard to get off it etc.
I think it's subsidised in my country so not too expensive (I think)

I am just saying, medication should be the last resort.

No, Buspar is Buspirone. 2 different drugs. Bupropion is slightly less useless.

Bupropion worked great for me for awhile, I compared it to being on a low dose of Adderall all the time. It was great because I could function fine on just 6 hours of sleep. But after a year, and having been prescribed lamotrigine, I started to get neurological symptoms and had to stop.

Made me manic and caused me to have outbursts. According to my girlfriend at the time it made me unbearable to be around. I'd get into arguments with people in public, and just act kinda insane.

Which is way out of character for me. It's not surprising it happened though since it is a stimulant.

Thats just my experience though. Everyone's different.

You're getting buspirone and bupropion mixed up.

Bupropion = Wellbutrin
Buspirone = Buspar

I had an allergic reaction to it. But that's supposedly extremely rare. It's supposed to have the mildest side effects of all anti depressants I think. I've never had an allergic reaction to any other med.

Just one person's experience. I have heard of it helping people. In my experience, it did not help at all. I lost 15kg and permanently lost my appetite. I stopped taking it more than a year ago and I still struggle to eat food every day. Not sure how rare or common that is.

FWIW, I mentioned bupropion to my GP (who is an extremely sweet lady and has been nothing short of awesome in helping me cope with my depression) and she immediately and very clearly stated that she would absolutely not prescribe it to me because there were several cases in the country of people suddenly feeling a very strong suicide urge and killing themselves, including people who were absolutely not depressed and took it as an aid to stop smoking (which it's apparently very efficient for), but suddenly got a suicide impulse and hanged themselves on the spot. So it seems your Dr isn't alone thinking there's a problem with bupropion and suicidal tendancies.

This is just my experience but I tried bupropion in early 2019 and within a week developed severe tinnitus. They told me it would stop if I stopped the medication, but I still have it to this day which has made my depression drastically worse. I'm certainly not anti-med and it's not a super common side effect, but if you google it you'll see I'm not the only one and I wanted to be honest. It's unfortunately so difficult to find that right balance of something that helps but also won't cause anything to get worse.
