Venting Biological immortality. Like i have a extra reason to be miserable

I need to stay OFF social media...

I was doom scrolling and came across a (fairly backed tbh) post about biological immortality becoming possible

I looked more into it and now i feel 100% terrified not only they forbid suicide as illegal, but people who don't understand what wanting to die is like, expect others to want to live forever too (or they are crazy/need antidepressants... until they're "normal")

Regardless, life spans extending crazy long is also a fucking NIGHTMARE to me. I wish these longeivity people would see how absolutely stupid it is to want to be here even longer....

Its just an obsessive fear now. Just the chance it could happen. And if it did, obviously we would be even more ostracized and shamed for wanting to leave this hell hole

I'm not sure really. Obviously, there are DNR's we can sign. But then, it is still within our rights to refuse medical treatment too. It does seem kind of crazy to me too though. Like- do doctors do these things just to prove that they can? Do they consider the implications of an aging population? I've worked in a care home where some of the residents were obviously suffering and did want out.

It scares me too- to end up like that. I hope to be out way before then though but then I tend to agree. We can't rely on the world being compassionate enough to realise that not everyone even wants a long life. That's not to say those who do want it should be denied of course. Good for them but- live and let die I suppose would be my preference.

That's never going to happen. Immortality doesn't appeal to many, many people, including a good chunk of non-suicidal people. The government cannot do unwanted medical procedures on you. It also wouldn't happen in our lifetime even if it were possible.

These people wanting to be immortal is like perpetuating a mistake ad infinitum, and immortality seems to me to be just a sweet illusion for those who fear death. Besides, all things deteriorate; we would have to be gods and break the laws of physics to be immortal. The universe continues to increase entropy until no movement is possible.

I seen some snippets and short clips of people discussing possibility of immortality or massively prolonging longevity. Never really looked into it but I don't find it unbelievable that a scientific breakthrough could happen where we could manipulate aging process to some degree. If you're a happy person doing well in life why not. I feel like best years are too short. That is period between 20-40 or 50. Sucks that those best years are usually spent trying to get your shit together instead of being secure and prosperous and being productive for yourself, your family if you have one, and society. If these years could be extended that would be nice. At least twice as long. If the longevity came at price of prolonging last years of your life when your body is giving up, I wouldn't want any of it. But I agree that capitalist pigs would want to exploit it as much as possible. They would work people for 200 years if they could.

As technology advances, so will knowledge of effective suicide methods. The general public will have more understanding of how their body works, and how to peacefully stop it working. And even things like survival instinct will be better understood in the future. (assuming we have a future, as climate disaster is looming anyway) I wouldn't worry too much about being forced to be immortal. It's a bit of a pipe dream by scientists anyway.

I agree, biological immortality seems unnecessary. It's one thing to not age for 100 years, but if the lifespan has no defined limit, and more people are created, it could put too much strain on resources.

the good news is that biological immortality, doesn't mean impervious to physical actions. I can have a stone that lasts for ages, but if it is thrown into a volcano it will likely melt (PS: don't take the metaphor too literally, CTB by volcano is not a quick guarantee coz one can fall into a section of rock away from the lava)

Tbh, since only some ppl want biological immortality (eg some friends don't choose it), and those who want it might opt out (stop treatments) eventually... I doubt it will reach a point where ~99.9% of ppl choose it.
