It seems to often come up, "Why do I need 40 minutes of inert gas when unconsciousness comes in a couple minutes and death within ten?"
The short answer is, "Because sometimes the body is really, really weird and survives what a body shouldn't." This article blows my mind about how this fellow went without air for so long with no apparent damage, but the medical explanations make sense. They also point out how unforeseen factors can save your life against all odds.
Seeing as the fellow had no intention of dying, it's a breathless tale (so to speak!) and I'm relieved he survived:
Note also his final comment about his new attitude toward death, and "it's more about what you leave behind." It's something we could all stand to think about for a moment.
