Yeah she was asssed by 5 psychiatrists and therapists. Regarding old people using euthanasia cause their kids can't afford their medical expensive, that sounds so cruel. I won't never let my parents even go to a seniour house even if I had to starve, they fed me, gave me everything, how can some sons and daughters do that to them. surreal.I saw the title of the thread and immediately knew what it was about. I'm hearing so I can't complain but this movie is poorly captioned but I'm not complaining just saying.
In my country in Poland it's not even debatable when you suffer from four stage cancer let alone mental suffering. I think that people too often make discussion "abortion & euthanasia" and the people who know nothing start to associate abortion with euthanasia. For example they might think that euthanasia is abortion done on older people. One of the main arguments against is "children of senior citizens will euthanize them in order not to pay for their old life care". No? In normal not pathological cases the person decided themselves to die and isn't forced by someone else? So we need to stop discussing euthanasia along with abortion. Those are 2 separate discussions.
My opinion as a person who knows absolutely nothing yet?
People have become super good in keeping ill people alive but unfortunately people haven't become super good in healing diseases yet. Doctors can keep alive patients for extremely long time. But is it always worth it? What I want to stress is that it's hard to judge because in case of mental health we don't always see what is inside. Look at Emily. She looks unkempt but she doesn't look like she's dying inside. We can't tell whether she has problems or not. So judging people while not being a doctor makes no sense.
I think it should be allowed but in as controlled manner as it was shown in the video. Many doctors discussed her state and they took responsibility. Of course euthanasia like "come here and die in five minutes" is not an option.
It's just their argument that euthanasia is bad I'm quoting them. It's not that simple though. Some people weren't good parents and that's why they are returned to senior houses. But yeah some people were good parents. That's why it needs to be done professionally.Yeah she was asssed by 5 psychiatrists and therapists. That's just how I felt. Jealousy that she had the option. I loved how kind and accepting her mum was, and also the doctor/psychiatrist who was so compassionate. As for the clinical psychologist who banged on about how most people keep living - she has no idea what mental suffering is like if you have it every day for years on end. I liked that they then cut it to the other doctor saying you have to talk to people and ask them how they are feeling. Exactly.Thank you for sharing that.
I saw the original documentary when it ended on Emily's decision not to go through with it & my heart ached for her, while at the same time feeling jealous & a little angry that she had the opportunity but turned it down when so many of us cannot access such a humane option.
I hope she has found peace
