For me, it's a mix between these two. You two pretty much put into words how I feel about God/religion/spirituality. I believe there is something more out there than we are told, although I personally am hoping for no afterlife for me.

I strongly believe that God is not so cruel as the churches portray him to be that he sends people to be tortured for eternity. Every sin, even those committed by the serial killers are finite in their cruelty, so they deserve a finite punishment. Not an infinite one.
