My mother tongue is Japanese but I've been verbally abused in it and sometimes it triggers me. So about 5 years ago I started to use English in my free time, and in my head. Now, every time my bad memories try to get into my mind, I say "English please" and they go away. This "language barrier" have made my life much more bearable.

I type English regularly but I've never spoken it last 10 years, so I'm a terrible speaker.

English native, learnt a little bit of Japanese a few years back but then work took up any free time I had.
Wish we still spoke Old English, sounds much better in my opinion.

My native language is Italian.
I've studied English at school, then I spent 20+ years using it in video games and chatting with people over the Internet.
I don't consider myself fluent, I can't understand when people are speaking English and my accent is terrible because even if I know english words I don't know how they are pronounced.

I'm surprised most are natives when another poll had a majority of EUs compared to Americans. Meaning this place must be filled with people from UK following those two pieces of data!!

Anyways, I'm from EU and my native language is not English (even if I'm good at it) but Italian. ❤️

Non-native. But I already learned the basics in 4th and 5th gtade, before I stopped paying attention to school, so I'm pretty good at it. The rest comes from watching a shit ton of english films and TV shows as a teenager. The only thing I have some difficulties with are commas; because in german we use them more often and there are stricter rules when and when not to use them. In english it eeems to be mote inuitive, based on how it sounds when you speak it out loud, which I prefer, but it takes a while to get used to it, especially if you learned the language through auditory means.
