This is such a complex problem, which I say as a centrist. Statistically speaking (meaning based on what we know from recorded observation and/or studies, which have their own baggage), these shots are by and large totally safe for the vast majority of people. The crux of the problem is that for a small percentage of people, which given how many have gotten them totals up to a very large number of people, there are really serious and awful adverse reactions. But they are totally ignored, likely seen as some kind of necessary casualty to save the greater number of lives from the potential catastrophic outcomes of an actual infection.
I find it so amusing that, at least where I live, there has long been a noticeable preference for the BioNTech/Pfizer shots, which is a huge evil pharmaceutical corporation with an already shitty ethics record, while Moderna is ostensibly smaller and less evil, and their shot was at least co-developed by a government body. Not to say money is out of the picture but like...I would choose the lesser of two evils, haha. There was a great article and video interview of a woman working for one of the subsidiaries of Pfizer collecting clinical trial data and came to say what a fucking shit job they were doing following protocol, and she was subsequentlt fired, Pfizer denied any wrongdoing, and the FDA declined to get involved altogether.
This is capitalism. Satisfy the need as much as possible, disregard any damage you can get away with...until you can't, then throw a tiny fraction of your bazillions of dollars at the problem to make it go away, because you've worked that part into the equation from the very beginning. Other industries have practices like this built into them too. It's disgusting. No wonder poor Dr. Hotez's open source vaccine is just sitting there with no attention or support - there's no money in it!
