What are your favorite ones? I think the last one I watched was Perfect Blue.

Perhaps it's because emotion can be meticulously tweaked through drawing/animation, whereas humans will be always be limited to a degree in their acting abilities.

It helps to have good voice actors.

That was a fucked up movie, you should watch paprika if you liked Blue. Same studio, and paprika is a trip for sure.

Agree about the voice acting, I can't stand dubs.

Re: the OP I like anime a whole lot, but I also like film. Not many modern films, but i love Kubrick, Coppola, etc. and there are a lot of good anime films.

My favorite animes are all from the era of hand drawn and water colored cels. I was getting into collecting cel art for a while... my favorite anime will always be the original mobile suit gundam, and zeta gundam the sequel. I don't like what they've done with the franchise in the past 20 years but back then sunrise was making so many good mecha anime, everything from robotech to gundam, to the cool starship troopers ova they made that was a lot closer tot he source material than the Verhooven film of the same name...

It's too bad Weepy Blinders incorporates modern pop songs ruining the authentic feel and throwing in contemporary woke shit like Tommy caring about racism. Laughable lol

for many Americans this was their first introduction to the series, but in many ways represents what I don't like about where the franchise went after the latter half of the 90s, when the original creator was ousted in favor of people who became more obsessed with toy sales than with quality story telling...

Do you're self a favor, and watch the originals. The theme is basically that war is hell, and there are no winners. As told by a man that lived through ww2. And the sci-fi concepts were so far ahead of the time. Now please Netflix don't ruin this one too!!!

I think it depends a lot also on the culture... I identify much more with the Asian culture, much of my life is based on that kind of thing (Kaizen, the 7 virtues of bushido, kendo... etc)... but until now I have never seen an anime like Forrest Gump, for example... it depends on the culture I think.

I'm kind of the opposite. Anime especially these days always feels like it's just trying too hard which means all of its flaws end up just being super amplified in my eyes. It also doesn't help that if you're someone who watches subs, then at some point it gets really tiring hearing the same few voices all give the same performances over and over with some very rare exceptions.

Most modern anime also tend to prioritize style over substance which makes a lot of them look pretty but ultimately flat and lifeless. This is why I prefer western cartoons because at least when they're uglier they're not trying to be beautiful art and it's easier to focus on what they're about rather than cultural propaganda to go join the military like so many shonen anime apparently are.

Maybe it's because anime has already lifted itself up to a higher standard that I've become more critical of it lately. I'm waiting for some new anime to completely blow me away but nothing I've seen that's come out in the last couple years has even come close except for maybe High Score Girl but that's just because it does a lot of things differently than other anime of its kind would. Maybe I just want something that hyper caters to all of my specific interests but it would be really tough to actually make something like that right now.

I rarely feel much when engaging with any type of media that is solely visual. Games make me feel things because I'm actually part of the world, books make me feel things because I more or less decide how dramatic things are, how characters look, etc. Movies, tv, shows, etc, all just usually bore me. I don't feel like I'm as involved as I want to be.

There's a few anime that I liked that touched me though. NGNL, Death Note. But even death note I didn't watch in its entirety. Skipped most of the second season out of boredom.

Well, that is season 2. I think it's better than season 1, but then end of season 1 is brutal. You'll understand why Jack looks and acts the way he does at the start of season 2.

24 is one of those shows that would never make it on tv today. It's so anti-pc, so much more real in how people feel and think than today's shows. All the characters have flaws, are wrong at some point. Jack is motivated to do what he thinks is right at any cost.

This will pass when you grow up. Anime is teenage-oriented. I still watch the odd series because I like the aesthetic and some stories are mature but overall anime is mind-numbingly stupid (for adults that grew up reading books like me).

It is objective truth that anime is catered to teenagers and can't really invest much into intellectuality or mature themes. In fact, I only began watching anime to fit in in my teens (Naruto), and in my late 20s when I became too exhausted and depressed to put in the work for literature and essays. But as I said, a few of it is good or even very good.

The last one I watched is Ousama Ranking. Weak by the end, but it captures the underlying seriousness of folk tales.

As a 6'5" white male pushing 40 I really can't bring myself to watch cartoon school girls in short skirts getting embarrassed easily and fantasizing over some douchebag-looking emo dude who's too skinny for his own good, but you do you.

I have watched a lot of movies from all decades. And I can say I believe anime is brilliant. I mostly tend to watch anime films instead of series though.

I believe animation always gets an immature connotation and not taken as seriously as a live action film. But there are so many fantastic anime films that deal with serious subject matter. I could say Grave of the Fireflies is one of them.

Then there is the artwork, which live action films really can't achieve in most of the occasions. It's easier for audiences to accept fantastical elements than in a live action. For instance, Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Adolescence of Utena. I can't imagine that being the same as a live action film.

I just watched Metropolis the other night. And while the 1927 Metropolis is brilliant, the 2001 Metropolis is also incredible, and it is an anime film.

And a movie that is geared for younger audiences such as My Neighbor Totoro I believe is a masterpiece. It doesn't even have as conventional of a plot, but it makes you happy and feel good when it ends and for me that's good enough.

And there's many that dive into deep philosophical territory. Such as Night on the Galactic Railroad.

The only thing I have watched for the last few years has been anime. I've only ever liked a handful of western TV shows, all the ones I liked either ended years ago, got cancelled, or turned to shit. I feel a lot of TV shows want to go on forever and inevitably lose sight of what made them good in the first place. I did like movies more than TV shows as they would usually be more creative with sci fi or fantasy concepts which TV shows don't usually have the budget for. In general, live action doesn't interest me as much, it's easier to achieve escapism with animation, and bad acting is less evident. I dislike western cartoons, though.

Anime like movies or TV shows is a medium, not a genre itself so it can't be said that it's all immature or targeted toward teenagers. Many of the popular genres and shows are but not all of them.

Most works in any medium are not going to be all that great, it's no different to anything else in that respect. Sturgeon's Law. I tend to read manga nowadays because I find it easier for my attention span than watching things.

A couple of years ago, I used to watch quite a lot of anime and I liked it more than any movie or TV show I ever saw. In many series, I liked the art style and I always liked the length of the episodes as well. Black Butler was probably my favourite. I do think I lost interest a bit and in general I struggle to concentrate and enjoy things.

Mostly immature and geared towards teenagers is what I said, not all. Though I think my problem was coming from a book reader perspective. The cognitive load is always going to be much lower in figurative media, and that includes manga or TV series. TV series are quite stupid most of the time lol.

Come to think of it, I think I have liked way more anime series than TV series, so seeing that was the original question I have to rephrase my answer, I think anime is BETTER than TV series. I really liked the anime Berserk and at least one of the movies, by the way. I recognize Griffith in you profile pic :P

I guess what I tried to tell Weebster is that I don´t think he will be as thrilled with anime as he grows older.

Movies lack the depth that long anime series can bring. Especially when anime is often directed by people from different culture. I love Anime because It can really bring death into a scene, same with brotherly love and honor. This is why I love Full Metal Alchemist.
And Anime is more subtle than movie. It is an art form as It is drawn, not cgied. It can be more personal and more a vision of a single person, so It can bring unique approaches and ideas. Like Neo Genesis Evangelion or Akira. These were beautiful works of art.
Also I love how grim anime can get. Something movies could only dream of but are too scared to show truth being afraid to loose viewers.
