I often listen to film soundtracks on Spotify. They make life seem more epic. Anyone else a fan and want to share their favourites? I love the work of: Ramin Djawadi, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman.

To start off though, from the film: 'The Neverending Story.' I love how it sounds all mystical but, slightly creepy. Plus- spoiler alert: the film has one of the most spine tingling moments in a children's film (for me) when we realise the book is real and relates to this reality:

I wrote yesterday in the chat that the soundtrack of "Gattaca" (1997) is the best I know of.

Hans Zimmer and Michael Giacchino are my faves, I'll check out Thomas Newman 👍🏻
Actually I haven't seen The Neverending Story either… when I was a kid I used to re-watch The Secret Garden and A Little Princess 😄

Michael Giacchino is in my playlist too. It's funny how we re-watch stuff as children- and adults too I guess. Labyrinth (1986) was my go-to film. Have you seen that? Probably still is my favourite film in a way. I still find it reassuring.

I never heard of this before. So I just search "film soundtracks" on Spotify? I love instrumentals because you can get lost and create your own fantasy as you listen. I'm going to search your favorites and listen while at work tonight. Thank you.

Yeah- Spotify is great- asides from the adverts. But- if you make a playlist of stuff you like, it will start to play recommendations and it can be super good. But yes, it has a few playlists of soundtracks already. I hope you enjoy it!

So many EPIC pieces from this film. I don't think I've actually even watched the film but, I love this piece too:

Wow- so beautiful. I love to watch orchestras play especially. I probably don't have a great ear for identifying instruments so, I love to see what goes into a piece. I love the passion with which musicians play too.

Oh God- Artax in the Swamp of Sadness. That's a massively distressing scene. Plus, just when you've stopped crying about that, the Rock Eater sits there and waits for 'the nothing' to take him. 'They look like such big strong hands...' I think somehow that scene gets to me even more... 😭 It was/is an amazing film. I'm actually ancient enough to have seen it at the cinema when it first came out. I was very young though. I actually thought it was going to go on forever! I felt really stressed about it! I don't think I properly enjoyed it because of that.

On a lighter note, I also love how mischievous this is... I love how everyone clearly loves to play it too:

As someone who almost exclusively listens to video game soundtracks, movie soundtracks are sadly less consumed by me. Once in a while there are exceptions although usually only singular tracks stick out to me instead of the entire albums. I think Muppet movies are the only ones where I enjoy most of all the songs in them but I guess other musicals have done it for me too, at least if they're animated.

The Godzilla Minus One soundtrack in particular was a notable standout though. I especially love how they used the classic Godzilla theme in the movie too.

lol we are definitely of a similar vintage- that horses death still haunts me- not to mention the terror those wolves instilled in me.

The gremlins was next on my favourite list- fantastic piece of music, or the goonies

Yes! Most music I listen to is from some movie so good that I want to rewatch it. But eventually rewatching gets boring, so I relive the movie through its soundtrack. It started with Jurassic Park music.

Wonderful... Please tell me that conductor does something from 'The Matrix'? Isn't his long coat so cool and like 'Neo'? I love conductors!

My God parents used to take me to see concerts. They were so kind. So many of my happiest memories were with them. Once, one of the choir members fainted though- poor guy. He was sort of being passed along the line. We didn't know what to do in the audience, so we all just started clapping. Didn't seem all that appropriate really. He must have felt so embarassed. It was a huge auditorium.

I definitely do this too. John Williams really should have been on my list and Vangelis too. There's always a very satisfying key change (I think that's the term- I'm not musical...) in the main Jurassic Park theme that I always find myself trying to whistle (badly) too.

It just amazes me though- how they can create music so fitting to a film.

I'm sure it does. Like- I used to wonder how important they actually were. Surely, all the musicians would know what they were doing regardless but- you always see them looking up at them. I love their personalities too. I guess they all have their own way of managing and getting the best out of people.

Have you seen the film 'Whiplash' 2014. I wonder if you get any like that too- really severe/ almost cruel in how hard they push people. I always feel nervous for the musicians. Like- what if they mess up? It must be so much pressure. Especially solo parts.

Yes- it was very unfortunate really. He was right in the middle of the row and they were right in the middle of: 'Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves'. They were trying to pass him towards the end of the row! The conductor did stop and explained how hot it was under the lights and, all we could really do was clap. He must have come around to that! Poor guy.

not sure if this is actually true but some pieces of music were supposedly created before the movie scene was filmed for eg ennio morricone allegedly said

"Some of the music was written before the film, which was unusual. Leone's films were made like that because he wanted the music to be an important part of it; he kept the scenes longer because he did not want the music to end." According to Morricone this explains "why the films are so slow".[54]"

Yes. I'm obsessed with this kind of music. I have about 200 bookmarks saved of film, tv, and videogame scores. There's too many to choose from but as I was scrolling through the playlist, this more obscure one caught my eye for some reason:

Oh yeah, most instrumental music I listen to are soundtracks! Like you, I'm also partial to Hans Zimmer and Ramin Djawadi. Lately I've added some Ludwig Goransson to my roster. My favourites from him:

I like some of Alan Silvestri's pieces too but that might be moreso due to their contextual emotional resonance for me (the MCU was a big part of my adolescence):
