I've only recently joined this site and it's got me thinking allot.

Behind every profile, there is a person, and every person has a story. This site has so many members and so many guests reading the posts and many have departed, caught the bus.

Here's what I'm wondering about...

I wonder if Anthony Bourdain or other high profile celebrities suffering in silence have found this site, poured their hearts out, sought help and support in anonymity on this site or similar sites?

We will never know, but perhaps Anthony Bourdain did not openly talk about his desire to end his life for fear of being judged or the fear of being locked up in a mental institution.

What if he and so many others had the chance to talk openly with their therapists without the fear of judgement and being locked up, perhaps he and so many others would still be alive today.

We need pro-choice therapists and psychiatrists.

That's my thought of the day. Thank you.

Yes. But why Anthony Bourdain specifically? He said that he was obssesed with suicide in the past.

The site is keeping me here. That and the fact that I made a promise not to go, and the people on the board said I can't. :blarg:

That being said, when it's time it's time. Nothing will stop it.

Why bourdain? Why not? He seemed to happy, even his closest friends say they didn't see it coming. If he and many others could openly talk about this touchy subject, without fear of judgement and shame and guilt and repercussions, rather than talk about it openly, would less people resort to catching the bus?

It's more taboo a subject than homosexuality. This forum exists because of the fear people have in talking openly about how they feel. It's like being gay in the 1950's. no one talked about it. It's like the hiv epidemic of the 1980's, no one talked about it. It's like the systemic sexual harassment of women, no one talked about it until the metoo movement.

Just my thoughts.

Bourdain was very open about his mental illness and drug habit.

I honestly wish our society was more open and honest about suicide, as well as being pro-choice. It genuinely amuses me that I have the right to live on steaks and cheesecake and destroy my heart, And not to mention I can smoke and drink all I want.and not to mention I can smoke and drink all I want Basically we can kill ourselves over a Long time and society won't even bat an eye but if we make the active choice to depart quickly we are labeled as having a mental health issue.

I found this site entirely by accident, and I was highly distressed before I did so. I didn't have anyone to talk to, and quite frankly didn't know how to CTB in a way that wouldn't be horrible. I wish people had access to this resource, if we're nothing else to spare them additional suffering. We certainly can't talk to our therapists about what we are going through since all that will get us is suicide watch and wellness checks.

talking about suicide can often help with it. Hiding our feelings, and being made to feel like we are doing something wrong or there is something wrong with us for having our feelings only feeds into the problem. I really hope each and everyone of you knows how amazing and important you are, and how many lives you all save as well as how many souls you save from excessive suffering in their last moments.

Same for Robin Williams. "Happy" people that are broken inside. That is the depression mask.

It's hard to say for sure, but I'm certain that if he was able to open up without risk of judgment and/or incarceration (mental ward, hospital), then he may be less inclined to CTB. Of course though, there are many variables as well, including factors that we just don't know (since we don't know his private life and all the little details).

I suspect in some ways it's worse if you are rich and famous. Lots of, let's call them lay people, will likely think you've got it so good you shouldn't have any right to want to ctb. I imagine this is why people like Kurt Cobain and Chris Cornell apparently shock the world when they have been discovered dead by their own hand. But if you look back you can see the warning signs. Usually drugs, and I can see how that happens when you are so rich you can make anything you want happen, yet they choose Street drugs to cope with their problems which ultimately leads to more problems on top!

Research Kurt Cobain , his suicide letter has been examined , thoughts are he didn't die by his own hand , some unsettling discoveries.

I have looked into it and there are some very unsettling things concerning the circumstances of his death. I've thought long and hard about it and I still think he ctb. I think his wife discovered it days before and tried to manipulate circumstances to her own advantage. She had a record coming out and I think she thought she could leverage it to make more money. The older and wiser I get the more narcissistic Courtney love seems to be. Actually very like my own mother. My theory on what happened. Kurt often made attempts to ctb that weren't widely known at the time. I think he escaped the rehab center (odd as he didn't need to jump the wall, he could have walked out the front door!) Made his way back home. Scored some H and gave himself a massive dose hoping he would be discovered but didn't really care so much either way. Wrote his suicide note before hand. Probably all as a gesture but then succeeded. His friends discovered him, paid someone to use his credit card while they figured out a legendary death by suicide. It has far more "marketability" than known heroin user Kurt Cobain was found dead of a drugs overdose. This would explain the lack of blood at the scene and the position of the gun being wrong with the shell casing in the wrong place. I think it was done post mortem.

I will watch it, I think it's about the practice hand writing samples Courtney love had made. I do think the suicide note had been altered. Kurt was so unwell it was just a matter of waiting for him to put himself in the right kind of danger then the rest could be orchestrated to fit what other people wanted. I suspect his wife and others in his house had gotten used to the suicidal gesture routine. But it maybe didn't go smoothly, perhaps it wasnt totally expected, hence the weird stuff that went on while apparently he was still missing and the private detective was looking for him. He felt he was been lead and that he was being sent on wild goose chases at several points.

Courtney Love has a lot to answer for. Michael Stipe hated her so much. She was a serial groupie in UK way before she snagged that sensitive pisces Cobain. Some know the truth however we never will. Chris Cornell had many demons from absolute chronic oxy & H use. He kicked it for only a very short time and was not known to be on MMT. Perhaps this could have saved him and thus Bennington. Truth is he just loved opiates so much.

The chances of high profile celebs and people of such high status being on here are low yet we cannot deny that the possibility is there may be some lurking here on this site as of right now.
To answer your question regarding the what if scenario but I still would believe that he would in fact still go through with his decision irregardless of support and the only difference being is that far less people would be surprise at his sudden exit.
I often ponder on the ludicrous yet possible idea of celebrities or actors and dare I say it those pop idols too are probably here right now lurking in the short of amount of free time to their inner selves that their job offers in such low quantities.

I do wonder if one day there is that one brave one that decides a new progressive jab that is too hot to touch yet good to sell is that whoever it is that lurks here will one day come out with honesty about being pro-choice and officially give us a new voice in our fight to secure the right to pro-choice.
They would certainly go down in history as someone that did something big and to think of all those eyes on such an individual will be something to see but without a doubt the chances of future movements towards our goal will inevitably grow because of this individual.

If only they do exist............

My therapist is not pro-choice in the suicide department but she's not judgmental or quick to react either. In the US I think she's as close as it gets. Any closer and it would be a real risk to her license. Their hands are a bit tied legally, which is why so many of them make sure clients are very clear on what they do and don't have to report.

EDIT: Just re-read the OP. I got so into the thread all the same thoughts came up as OP's, and I basically repeated the OP with lots more words. So yeah, here's the short version: @HadEnough1974, I totally agree.

__________

What an interesting thread you created @HadEnough1974!

About Anthony Bourdain and pondering if he'd had SS...

When something is taboo, forbidden, it can take on more power than it merits and an obsessive lure.

When religion dictates celibacy, sex can become an obsession that causes self-hatred, fixation, and acting out. Society dictates no suicide, no confronting its validity, and it grows all out of proportion and recognition.

By looking at ctb and engaging with it, taking about it, it can shrink to more manageable proportions. It no longer takes so much attention, and underlying causes, potential solutions and other issues have room to be noticed when they're waving and saying, "We're here, too. We need a little attention, thanks."

What if everyone Anthony approached tried to talk him out of it? "Turn that frown upside down, turn that noose into an apron holder!" What if they insisted he hear instead how much they wanted him to live, how devastated they'd be, etc.? I've been guilty of all of the above in the past, and what I observe in retrospect is that it made no difference for them. They didn't feel heard. They found no resolution. They felt even more unheard and alone.

If that happened to Anthony, then it begs the question, What if he'd had us?

Would the idea that was with him for years have lost some of its power over him, if in fact it had some? If it was the best choice, did he die confident that it was? Did he have his own tools to work out the complex issues that come with the consideration as well as the choice to ctb? Did he die carrying greater burdens than he needed to if only he'd had this kind of support?

If any celebrities ever come here, hiding behind a username as the rest of us do, I hope they enjoy the real support here that they can't find from those who want the celebrity to live so that others can keep benefitting off of them. I hope they get someone like me to give them no-bullshit responses. I hope they experience all the support for self-determination the rest of us do, all the normalizing of a topic that has engaged humanity since humans. And if they find they'd rather live, receive the support for that as well.

I gotta stop. I'm about to start singing Kumbayah...
