The thing that will finish me off is the knowledge of the horrific things that humans subject animals to.

The horrors of factory farming, the barbarity of the ways that monkeys and other animals are experimented on and psychologically destroyed in labs, seal clubbing, whale harpooning, psychologically and physically 'breaking' elephants and other wild animals in circuses, live baiting in greyhound training (
i.e the australian greyhound scandal where piglets, possums and rabbits were secretly filmed being tied to mechanical lures to be chased, caught and attacked by greyhounds for up to 30 minutes. Some animals had young forcibly taken and given to dogs whilst trainers laughed, mocked and cursed at them. One poor creature was mourning the death of its young whilst the trainers just stood there mocking it. Another poor animal's spine came back broken in half after a few rounds being chased, to be laughed at by those present
), and the list goes on.

Being deliberately cruel to animals is something I cannot fathom.

When I see images of humans subjecting animals to torture I just want to blow my brains out for being human, and because I know that I'm powerless to stop it.

I guess it's a way of overcoming SI for me.

It makes me sad and angry too. There's currently a trend of fake animal rescue videos on places like YouTube and Tik Tok. People will abuse animals, pretend to rescue them for a video so they gain views and internet clout.

Studies have shown our ability to empathise hinges on perceptions of the victims empathy. Thus most people are more distressed by cruelty to animals than humans even though everything we know suggests humans can suffer far more.

Don't get me wrong. It is egregious that people commit random acts of animal cruelty and get such feeble punishment. It's also awful that animal cruelty or testing in an industrial context occurs where it is often not necessary, like in producing cosmetics, but animal experiments also produce very important results, and animals form part of our diet which is unavoidable for many.

We live in a cruel reality. Nature is savage. We have the capacity to do better, and many of us do. That's something.

Yes, but it's a continuum though.

Yes, humans are psychologically more complex and sophisticated than any other animal, and have self-reflexive and cognitive capacities which enable them to consider the totality of their lives in a biographical way, but there's no obviously unbridgeable gulf with the rest of nature. Dolphins, gorillas, chimps, elephants, even octopuses, exhibit behavior suggestive of real self-consciousness and the capacity to suffer quite deeply, not just in a superficial immediate pain response way.

And some recent ethological and neuroscientific research suggests that lack of neocortex is not an impediment to attributing consciousness to 'lower' animals like birds. Consciousness may have evolved in parallel to that of mammals in the class of the aves, despite lack of a neocortex.

I know this doesn't go against anything you said, but in terms of pain and awareness of pain and psychological stress and distress, there is quite a bit of evidence that these are pervasive and varying in degrees across the natural world, with no obvious discontinuities when humans are in the picture. (see, the 'cambridge declaration on consciousness').

but animal experiments also produce very important results, and animals form part of our diet which is unavoidable for many.
Yes, they have produced some important medical results, but so much animal experimentation or research is simply unnecessary too, considering the suffering involved. As well as the cosmetics testing you mentioned, all those psychological behavioral studies which produce trivial or questionably-applicable-to-humans outcomes just so a psychology textbook can be updated for the next edition.

I'm not completely against eating animals or their products if they are treated with respect and not made to suffer. But these standards are just incompatible with large-scale factory farming where cost-cutting and efficiency take center stage in the name of profit. .
and many of us do. That's something
yes, I guess it is. It's just difficult to see any light or goodness sometimes.

Well I said suggests specifically as I don't want to provoke a debate about animal cognition (it's such a huge subject and the more we look the more we find we don't know) that said I actually agree with your point that animals can, indeed, suffer in sophisticated ways, but I'm not defending animal cruelty or suggesting humans suffer more because animals can't suffer, or suffer less.

My point is the connection between innocence and empathy is an extraordinarily dangerous cognitive bias.

Beware any culture in which it is the norm. Like our own.

And I can totally understand finding acts of animal cruelty especially repugnant, and finding animals uniquely sympathetic. The animals targeted are generally defenseless and this suggests a certain premeditated sadism. However even this line of thinking can take you to troublesome places. I mean if you accidentally run over someone in your car you're more likely to be charged, and will serve more time if they are a young white woman, less if they're a man, less again if they're a black man.

So much hinges on our perception of the victim's innocence and fragility, and it influences decisions in contexts where it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I'm not completely against eating animals or their products if they are treated with respect and not made to suffer. But these standards are just incompatible with large-scale factory farming where cost-cutting and efficiency take center stage in the name of profit.

True, and some food industries are also a humanitarian and ecological disaster. Raising cattle for example may not be especially cruel but it involves wasting enourmous amounts of food, water and land simply to create comparatively tiny amounts of new food which rich people like the taste of.

That said I would by wary of glamouring any sort of farming. Watch a small farmer castrate and slaughter their animals. Being innured to cruelty is just part of the job. That someone somewhere else is being even crueler or doing it on a larger scale doesn't change that.

It's just difficult to see any light or goodness sometimes.

No doubt you can see it in yourself. I know this is true of me. I also see the same capacity for ugliness I so often opine. It's not so much what you have, but what you do with it that counts. Almost everyone can be altruistic and pro-social; almost everyone can be selfish and cruel, and if you put people in conditions where the former is beneficial they will tend to spurn the latter.

Sadly those conditions do not currently exist anywhere on a larger scale, and even on small scales the dynamic breaks down in some contexts.

Hard agree. Watching animal cruelty footage is the fastest way to induce suicidal urges within me. But then I feel terrible because animals haven't exactly got the option to escape their suffering like we do. Now that is hell.

Not only that but just think of all the many billions of animals that suffer horrors in factory farms. Before I jump on my horse, I'm not vegan/vegetarian so I know that I have blood on my hands but nihilism has always been a demotivating feature of my life.

I know a family that NEVER take their dogs (westies) for a walk it kills me knowing they cba to take them.
I use to go visit them as they are friends of mine, I'd ask can I take them for a walk, the answer... no, with loads of excuses.
All 3 have to piss and crap in this tiny garden, then its back indoors where they sit all day. It's like they're little living teddies who have to just sit by their side, they are loved, cared for, I dunno, their food is left out alllll daaay, they have no feeding time ;(

One day I was round and one of the dogs growled at one my friends, so he told his wife 10 minutes later, then she screwed up a newspaper and hit him on the back with it... it hurt so much to watch, knowing it had been well over 10 minutes the dog obv forgot why he was being told off, plus you don't hit them.

I find it interesting that some people go out of their way to alleviate/eliminate the suffering of animals, while others do the same to magnify it. And both (there is an interest in how the animals feel) seem different from treating animals like cattle (for personal advantage, contentment/suffering of the animals is secondary if not irrelevant).

Did you know that people stage animal rescue videos for money and clicks on YouTube? They intentionally put animals in danger or injure them to "save" them and be celebrated as heroes.

I recently came across this issue and I'm still shocked.

However, I knew that there is a big animal cruelty issue on YouTube. It starts with beetle fights, rat traps and goes all the way to baby monkeys, cats and dogs and so on.

It's just so sick and twisted people do that just for some internet clout. And I don't think YouTube is doing much to take these videos down, even if they've been reported
