So today I almost died. Usually it wouldn't be surprising if someone like me (a suicidal person) would make an attempt on their life. This however was not intentional at all, I hadn't even planned for it to happen in the first place, it was purely accidental.
So I came home to find my puppy had peed all over the house. Wanting to get rid of the smell I thought for some reason that it was a good idea to mix bleach with a cleaning disinfecter. For some reason my mind seemed to forget that mixing bleach with ammonia can cause a extremely dangerous toxic vapor (chloramine). I know I put a lot more bleach and disinfector then necessary because the smell of urine was really strong. Since it was in my basement there were no windows I could open up to air it out anyway.
At first my eyes and throat started to burn and I just pushed that thought to the side because I thought it was the bleach. The next case of events are a bit blurry but I remember starting to cough violently after my having this incredibly painful burning sensation in my chest. I got extremely lightheaded and don't remember passing out at all. This was how my grandma found me passed out on the couch in the basement and called 911 immediately.
I woke up in the hospital with the most painful sore throat imaginable and I was put on oxygen. My first thought immediately went to if my dogs were okay or not and needing them to get checked out at the vet.
My doctor monitoring me thought I was insane for being more concerned about them even though I almost lost my life.
Fair to say that method won't be used when I actually ctb.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm glad you're ok!

FYI: ammonia isn't good for cleaning urine anyway. For pet accidents, get an enzyme odor neutralizer like nature's miracle. Otherwise, your dogs will forever pee in those spots, because they have the scent, even if you can't smell it.

Rookie cleaning mistake. I remember mixing ammonia & bleach and almost passing out in a bathroom once. You can give your lungs a real chemical burn.

I'll make sure to keep that in mind. Definitely won't make the same mistake again

Yeah they still burn afterwards as well. My throat is also messed up, I sound like a smoker

Yeah got them checked out at the vet right away, thankfully they were upstairs at the time. My older dog was technically the one who alarmed my grandma by scratching at the door to the basement.

Shit, never knew that could happen! I tend to avoid bleach, hate the stuff, but jeez glad you are OK

If you didn't plan on dying that way it was an accident and by definition not a suicide attempt.

Your experience does sound horrible. Hopefully the effects will be over soon and you'll be allright.

This story hammers home the point of thinking very carefully about how one wants to die. Imo no-one should have to do so in pain or at least not an overwhelming amount of it. To me that is a great aspect of this forum: while discussing methods may seem morbid and even gruesome it fulfills the important function of harm reduction.

It's human to act foolishly and without thinking especially in times of great stress but hopefully open communication with others will mitigate that.
