I don' think their is an ideal age to be completely honest. Although for me i want to go before 30, I've never wanted to make it to 30...

Back in the days of alt.suicide.holiday and alt.suicide.methods I remember seeing a lot of "You should at least wait until 23", although I couldn't tell you why everyone said that anymore. I'm 29 though

IMO never.

IMO it shouldn't be like I hit x, y, and z and now I ctb. I think it should be the last resort.

Now I think age is a good thing if you look at when your brain more than less stops developing (which is about 25) or if you say if things won't get better by x time. But I don't think suicide should ever be a simple check box situation.

There's no "best." Just like there's no "good" or "bad," "right" or "wrong."

It's all purely subjective - driven by personality, perception, tolerance level and experiences.

In retrospect, 25 would have been good for me.

Before the 18th century, people were only 30-35 years old. It doesn't seem natural to be over 35 :D

I will answer this question a message I posted yesterday.

"It´s easier to do as a teenager especially with depression because then you have a great emotional drive from the teenage hormones racing through your body, the depression and also the fact that at that age your frontal cortex isn´t fully developed so a lot of your thinking is emotional from the amygdala (the part of the brain controlling emotions)

I so wish I had killed myself as a teenager because I had so much drive to do it as mentioned above and it felt so good to think about suicide and everything sorrounding it but I stupidly decided to give life another chance and now I am an adult with no teenage hormones racing through my body and I have become apathetic and have anhedonia so I don´t feel emotions anymore i.e. no depression so no sadness either as a drive just nothing."

So I say pretty much any teenage age for the reasons stated above and also because if I had killed myself when I made my first attempt then I would have been spared from a decade of pain and suffering.

For me, it's anytime before retirement age. I (like most of us) will never be able to "retire" in the sense that previous generations retired and stopped working, so if I'm going to go while I'm working anyway, I'd like to have some control over it.

That said... I'm 45 now, and my first attempt was more than 20 years ago. In many ways, I wish that had been successful because everyone's memories would have faded by now. It was also a lot easier then, because if I had failed and had to go to the hospital, I wouldn't face the possibility of losing my job, my home, and everything else that barely makes life tolerable. Once you get into the trap of working in a career and paying off life's necessities, there's a whole lot more riding on the decision (and even moreso if you've started a family and have loved ones, close friends, etc.).

I'm almost 23, although an age to ctb doesn't really sing to me.

I think most of us go as a last resort. Nobody should ctb over something easily fixed/obtainable.

In retrospect 19 would have been the best time for me. I was already "not well" for years but I was still a pretty decent guy with a few dreams and a little hope, I had still a family and even a few friends. I couldn't have done everything I did afterwards and I would have left as a decent person.

Nearing 30. First attempt was before I was 20, and I have since regretted that it didn't work.

At least 18. That also happens to be the minimum age requirement for SS. Which makes sense, because at 18, it's safe to assume that you're mentally mature enough to handle CTB.

In some cases waiting and seeing if life has anything to offer you may be beneficial if the pain isn't unbearable, but in others it's a waste of time. Certainly for me it has been a waste. I'm 27 now and if I had ctbd at 19 when I first started thinking about it seriously I would have spared myself a lot of pain, and would have missed out on very little pleasure.

Whenever you feel like you've had enough with life you'll just go for it.

33 here. I'm probably at my limit and unless things get WAY BETTER, I might ctb before my 40s.

Look into yourself and ask yourself what you believe in. You got the answer for that somewhere. Because it´s different for everybody. And I think for something as grave as this, the decision should be fully yours to make.

There is no best age to me. The only thing that matters regarding age is that one ctb while they're still physically able to execute their plan and independent enough to be left alone for some time.

Regardless if I ever get out of my long term depression or not I still want to ctb before my health declines and I'm bedridden.

There is no better age. Many are happy before the age of 80, many are never happy.

Best age would be wrapping the umbilical cord around your neck before birth.

Since you obviously missed that cutoff, there is no optimal age. Once the suffering outweighs any chance of happiness, it is time. Only you can know when that is for yourself.
